Top Mistakes First-Time Lake Erie Charter Clients Make

Booking your first Lake Erie fishing charter is exciting. It’s also completely normal to have questions or uncertainties about how the day will go.
Over the years, we’ve seen a few common mistakes that first-time charter clients make — most of which are easy to avoid with a little preparation. If you understand these ahead of time, you’ll be far more comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy your day on the water.

Mistake #1 — Assuming You Won’t Get Motion Sickness
This is by far the most common issue we see first-time Lake Erie charter clients make. Many guests say, “I’ve never been seasick before.” These are often their last words before vomiting over the gunnel. Seasickness is completely preventable with pre-charter medications.
Lake Erie is a large, shallow lake that can develop short, steep waves very quickly. Even experienced boaters can feel motion sickness under certain conditions. We strongly recommend taking preventative motion sickness medication.
What We Recommend
Take Dramamine or Meclizine (both available over the counter) the night before your trip at bedtime
Take another dose the morning of your trip at least one hour before leaving the dock
Eat a light breakfast
Stay hydrated
These medications work best when taken before symptoms begin, not after. Waiting until you feel sick is too late! Being proactive here can make the difference between an incredible day and a miserable one.
Mistake #2 — Bringing Too Much Gear
Charter fishing on True North is very different from shore fishing or small-boat fishing.
We provide everything you will need to catch fish:
Rods and reels
Bait and tackle
All necessary fishing equipment
Guests often arrive with large tackle bags, multiple coolers, or extra items they simply won’t need.
Travel light. Bring only personal items such as:
Sunglasses and sunblock
Hat
Weather-appropriate clothing (Layers and/or rain gear)
Food and beverages (You only need food and drink for a few hours, not a few days!)
Fishing license
Less clutter means more room to move safely and comfortably. There is plenty of refrigeration aboard True North for your food and drinks. Large coolers are not needed.
Mistake #3 — First Time Lake Erie Charter Clients Don't Dress for the Weather
Weather on the lake can feel very different from conditions on shore.
Common first-time mistakes include:
Not bringing layers
Underestimating wind exposure
Forgetting rain gear
Not using sun protection
Even on warm summer days, early morning runs offshore can feel cool. On spring and fall trips, temperatures can change dramatically throughout the day. Layering is always the best strategy.
Mistake #4 — Skipping Breakfast
Some guests avoid eating because they’re worried about motion sickness.
This usually makes things worse. An empty stomach can increase nausea and fatigue. A light, simple breakfast helps stabilize your body and maintain energy levels during the trip.
Good options include:
Toast or bagels
Fruit
Yogurt
Eggs
Avoid heavy or greasy meals.
Mistake #5 — Expecting Fishing to Be Effortless
Lake Erie is an incredible fishery, but it is still fishing — not a guarantee. Conditions change daily. Wind, water temperature, bait movement, and fish mood all play a role.
Professional captains must constantly adjust:
Locations
Trolling speeds
Depths
Lure presentations
Techniques
Staying patient and trusting the process is part of the experience. Even with location and tactics changes, sometimes the fish just don't bite! That's why it's called fishing and not catching!
Mistake #6 — Being Afraid to Ask Questions
Charter trips are not just about catching fish — they are also an opportunity to learn.
First-time guests sometimes hesitate to:
Ask about techniques
Ask how electronics are used
Learn how to fight and land fish properly
We encourage interaction. A personalized charter means your experience matters. Even if you are a great fisherman, keep an open mind to learn the True North methodologies. Fishing the open waters of Lake Erie is likely very different than the fishing you are used to.
Mistake #7 — Underestimating Lake Erie Bug Hatches
One surprise for many first-time charter guests is the Lake Erie midge hatch, which typically occurs in early summer and again in early fall when water temperatures reach a certain value (60-65 deg F). These insects do not bite — but they can be a real nuisance.
During heavy hatches, midges can:
Swarm around the boat
Smash into clothing, faces, and sunglasses
Collect on seats, rods, electronics, and decks creating slippery surfaces
Create a noticeable mess
Slow fishing activity
Large hatches can temporarily impact fishing because fish may feed heavily on these emerging insects or become less aggressive toward artificial presentations. While the bugs themselves are harmless, being prepared makes the experience far more comfortable.
Even on warm days, you will appreciate wearing:
Long sleeves
Lightweight pants
A hat and sunglasses
These simple clothing choices help keep you comfortable and focused when the bugs are out. Bug sprays such as Off or Cutter have no impact on these midge swarms.
Mistake #8 — Underestimating How Valuable Comfort Is
A long day on big water can be physically demanding. Taking breaks to get out of the wind and sun is important. First-time clients often don’t realize how important features like:
A stable, larger boat
Air conditioning or heat
A private bathroom
Protection from sun and wind
can be to overall enjoyment.
Comfort aboard True North allows anglers to stay focused longer, fish more effectively, and enjoy the entire experience, even when conditions are challenging.
