A Complete First-Time Guide

Booking a True North Lake Erie fishing charter is exciting — but if you’ve never done it before, you probably have questions. What time do we leave? How long do we fish? What should we bring? Will we be comfortable?

At True North Charters, our goal is simple: deliver a professional, personalized, full-day fishing experience that is enjoyable for first-time anglers, families, couples, and serious fishermen alike.

Here is exactly what you can expect on your Lake Erie charter trip.

A Full-Day, Personalized Fishing Experience

Unlike many charter operations that run multiple trips per day, True North runs one trip per day. This allows us to fully focus on your group and tailor the trip around your goals, experience level, and the day’s fishing conditions.

We typically leave the dock around 6:30 AM fish until 2:00–2:30 PM or until your group reaches the daily limit. Some days the fish cooperate quickly. Other days require strategy changes. Having a full day available gives us the flexibility to adjust techniques and locations to produce results. Your day is never rushed.

Professional Equipment and Tournament-Level Technology

Lake Erie is a big, dynamic fishery. Success often comes down to precision and information.

Our 40’ Pursuit is equipped with state-of-the-art Garmin electronics, including sonar with 4 screens for quick visibility, GPS mapping, radar, and automatic identification system (AIS). These tools allow us to:

  • Locate productive schools of fish

  • Track fish movement

  • Track incoming storms

  • Navigate safely in low visibility

  • Adjust trolling patterns with precision

Modern technology combined with experience helps us stay on active fish and maximize your opportunity for success.

Fishing Methods Tailored to You

Every trip is customized.

Depending on the season, weather, and your preferences, we may:

  • Jig for spring walleye

  • Troll offshore locations

  • Drift and cast weight forward spinners and w0rm harnesses in productive areas

  • Combine multiple techniques in one day

First-time anglers often enjoy trolling because it provides consistent action. Experienced fishermen may prefer casting or experimenting with different presentations. We build the day around your comfort level and goals.

Comfort Matters on Lake Erie

Lake Erie weather can change quickly. Wind, waves, and summer heat are real factors that can impact your enjoyment. True North Charters operates a large, stable and safe 40’ boat designed for comfort and safety, featuring:

  • Heat and air conditioning

  • A full private bathroom

  • Hot water

  • Multiple refrigeration areas

  • Large onboard freezer — no coolers needed

These features allow guests to relax, stay comfortable, and fish longer even when conditions are less than ideal. This is especially important for couples, families, and older guests who want a premium experience.

What You Should Bring

We provide all bait, tackle, and fishing gear. You only need to bring a few personal items:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers recommended)

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

  • Food and beverages for the day

  • A valid Ohio fishing license

  • Motion sickness medication if you are prone to seasickness

  • Phone/Camera

Travel light. Our boat has ample storage and refrigeration.

Understanding Limits and Fish Cleaning

Lake Erie is one of the top walleye fisheries in the world, and daily limits are established to protect the resource. The current limit is 6 fish per person per day. These walleye need to be at least 15 inches long. In July and August we add combined walleye and steelhead trips. Steelhead need to 12 inches and you are allowed 5 per person per day.

Our goal is always to put you in position to catch your limit, but fishing is still fishing. Some days are better than others. Although we can never guarantee a limit of fish, we can guarantee we will work hard to find and put fish in the boat!

At the end of the trip, we are a happy to fillet you catch for $2.00 per fish. You can also clean your own fish at one of our nearby public cleaning stations. You are also welcome to take your fish to your favorite fish cleaner around the lake.

Safety Is Always a Priority

We take safety seriously. Our vessel is equipped with advanced marine safety equipment including:

  • Personal flotation devices for all guests

  • Radar and AIS collision-avoidance systems

  • Night-vision capability

  • Modern navigation and communication systems

Your captain constantly monitors weather and lake conditions to ensure a safe and productive outing.

What truly separates a personalized charter from a standard fishing trip is flexibility. Want to try casting instead of trolling? Fishing with kids or elderly guests?
